Starting an LLC and the procedures and costs vary by state. Here in Virginia it is as easy as registering through the State Corporation Commission website. You do an "entity search" with the prospective name for the proposed business to find out if it already exists in your state, then simply register the company with your contact information as a single owner LLC. If you have partners in it, then you must provide articles of incorporation that detail ownership percentages and responsibilities, etc. 

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to share what knowledge I have of the subject for everyone else out there.
